Special Services Requests

A special services request is an open records request for an item that has a fixed rate service charged by the SCSO. These records are generally maintained by the Records and Identification Division of SCSO and includes certified copies of warrants, record checks, personal history sheets and arrest tickets.

The Records Unit of Records and Identification division of the SCSO serves as the keeper of criminal arrest records for the Sheriff's Office and the Memphis Police Department. This unit's primary function is to maintain, update and as provided by law, to release criminal arrest information to the public and law enforcement agencies. Upon request, criminal history information is available to law enforcement agencies and the general public.

When state and federal laws require an organization to conduct a background check and/or fingerprinting prior to employment, for acceptance into the U.S. Armed Forces, or prior to purchase of a handgun. The Records and Identification section will provide these and other services for a fee.

The Technical Unit of Records and Identification division of the SCSO has the primary responsibility for the positive identification of all arrested persons and suspects. This is done by fingerprint classification, verification and analysis. Fingerprint technicians accomplish these actions by either manual classification and searches or by use of the (Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) open link opens in a new window) or a combination of both.

Once the positive identification has been made either a new criminal history record is created or a prior criminal history record is updated to reflect the arrest. Technical unit clerks are responsible for the fingerprinting and processing of persons issued misdemeanor citations.

The records and identification section operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide services to law enforcement agencies but service hours for the general public are from: 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday--Friday
