The Accreditation Office researches, updates and maintains all the Policies and Standard Operating Procedures for the Shelby County Sheriff's Office and the Shelby County Jail.
The Accreditation Office's main purpose is to ensure that the Shelby County Sheriff's Office continues to uphold the high standard and principles of two agencies that have awarded the Sheriff's Office accreditation, the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) and the American Correction Association (ACA) and to remain accredited. Posted online are versions of all the Policies and Procedures and Standard Operating Procedures for both the Law Enforcement and Jail Divisions and they are accessible by employees of the Sheriff's Office at any time on the Sheriff's Intranet (Internal Web Site). It is easily updateable and reduces paper costs.
The Accreditation Office publishes an employee newsletter called “Accreditation Update News”, with the latest news and updates regarding Policies. This newsletter is also available for reading online to all Sheriff's Office employees.
The Accreditation Office works closely with CALEA to follow CALEA guidelines for Accreditation. CALEA stands for Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc.
CALEA is a voluntary accreditation for law enforcement agencies based on a body of standards internationally accepted by the law enforcement community.
