Two Children, brother and sister, hit by a pick-up truck in East Shelby County

Release Date: March 12, 2003

Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Investigators say two small children, who are brother and sister, were hurt today after being hit by a pick-up truck on Macon Road in East Shelby County. Both children were airlifted to Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center with injuries to their legs. They are in critical but stable condition this evening. Deputies say the accident happened as nine-year-old Jaterica Shotwell and seven-year-old Jalen Guy were out front of their home at 10703 Macon Road, near Pisgah Middle School.

Witnesses told Traffic investigators the two children were standing by the side of the road and suddenly ran into the street in front of a pick up truck. The driver of the truck was 52 year-old John Hughes of Germantown.

Based on statements by a witness and the investigation surrounding the circumstances of the accident, no charges will be placed against Hughes. Sheriff’s deputies believe there was no way he could have avoided hitting the children.
