Free Programs Offered for Child Passenger Safety Week

Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies, working in conjunction with the West Tennessee Child Passenger Safety Center, will be focusing their attention this weekend and next week on the safety of children riding in vehicles. “National Child Passenger Safety Week” runs from September 20th through September 27th. Several educational programs will be offered to teach people the proper way to secure infants and children in vehicles.

“While our Deputies will be paying close attention to drivers and children passengers next week, child safety specialists with the West Tennessee Child Safety Center will be conducting free training programs throughout the community. Despite all the attention given to the safety of children in vehicles, our Officers often see children not properly restrained,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

The West Tennessee Child Passenger Safety Center, a division of the Governor’s Highway Safety Office, is housed at the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Station in Arlington.   Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians at the center not only work throughout Shelby County but neighboring communities in West Tennessee. 

Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians teach law enforcement officers, health care professionals and the public the proper installation of Child Restraint Systems.  The technicians also work closely with several community agencies that underwrite the educational programs.  Some of those sponsors include “Safe Kids Worldwide” and Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center.
