Traffic Enforcement Effort on Interstate 40 and the Interstate 240 Loop Yields 84 Traffic Violations

Release Date: March 6, 2004

Shelby County Sheriff Mark Luttrell, Jr. says the traffic enforcement effort on Interstate 40 and 240 last evening sent a clear message to motorists who continually violate the speed limit.

“Our officers the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Tennessee Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division and the Memphis Police Department put special emphasis on traffic violations on these busy roadways. Acting on citizen complaints, crash statistics and our own observation of motorists, we felt there needed to be a strong message sent to the public,” said Sheriff Luttrell.

The enforcement effort yielded 84 violations. Here is the breakdown:

  • 63-traffic citations
  • 19-courtesy tickets
  • 2-arrests for driving without a license

Speeding is a traffic safety problem on Interstate 40 and 240. Traffic officers say people are speeding as well as disregarding special speed zones at many construction zones on the roadway. Officer say despite signs and flashing lights, many motorists are putting themselves at risk by not obeying the recommended speed limits.

Sheriff Luttrell says the combined traffic enforcement efforts by the Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement agencies will be on-going.
