Students Needed for Sheriff’s Office Academy for Citizens

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is taking applications for the citizen academy which will be offered later this summer beginning August 24, 2004.

“This is the third time we’ve conducted the academy. It will be an excellent opportunity for people to learn more about the inter-workings of the Sheriff’s Office,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H . Luttrell, Jr.

During the eight week course students will see demonstrations, participate in group discussions and attend presentations by officers and staff members from the various divisions.

  • Civil Division-Courts
  • Metro Gang Unit
  • Fugitive
  • Homeland Security
  • Courtroom Security
  • Patrol Support Service
  • Crime Report Center
  • Firing Range
  • Crime Analysis
  • Jail Operations
  • Bomb Squad
  • Patrol
  • Dog Squad
  • Narcotics
  • Training
  • Pistol Range
  • Reserves
  • Emergency Services
  • Traffic
  • Public Affairs
  • S.W.A.T.
  • Detectives
  • Crime Prevention
  • Special Services
  • Bureau of Accountability/Standards

Besides the weekly evening meetings, there will be four Saturday demonstration classes. Those interested may call the Crime Prevention Office at 867-1401 or register by E-mail at the Sheriff’s Office website at www.shelby-sheriff.org. Students must pass a criminal background check to attend the sessions.
