Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies Assist In Chicago Murder Investigation

Release Date: February 1, 2006

Darrell D. CarterHomicide Detectives with the Chicago, Illinois Police Department say a persuasive Shelby County Sheriff’s Detective led to the collection of vital evidence needed for a murder investigation in that city.

Darrell D. Carter, 22, of Memphis, was already in the Shelby County Jail on a disorderly conduct charge when the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by Chicago law enforcement authorities.

Carter’s fingerprints showed he was wanted by the Cook County, Illinois Sheriff’s Office for a parole violation. Additionally, Chicago Police Homicide Detectives contacted Sheriff’s Deputies because Carter was also wanted for questioning about the murder of a Chicago man on September 29, 2004.

The victim, Lawrence Buchanan, 41, was robbed at his Chicago home, his hands and feet were bound and he was left to suffocate to death by a gag stuffed in his mouth.

About two weeks, Chicago Homicide Squad detectives asked the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Detective Division to see if Carter would give a DNA sample for the murder investigation.

Sheriff’s Detective Terrell Robertson went to the Shelby County Jail and interviewed Carter who not only gave the DNA sample but said he would cooperate with the Chicago Police regarding the murder investigation.

“This is an excellent example of how the Sheriff’s Office works with other law enforcement agencies. Detective Robertson is to be commended for his part in assisting the Chicago Police detectives in their attempt to solve this brutal murder,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.

Chicago Detectives took Darrell D. Carter back to Illinois on January 25, 2006, to face the murder charge and for violating parole.
