Tomorrow, employees with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office will assist students at Klondike Elementary in North Memphis as they build a vegetable garden at the school located at 1250 Vollentine.
Klondike is the “adopt-a-school” for the Sheriff’s Office. For the past week students have studied a variety of science topics, including gardening, during the Klondike Science and Engineering Camp.
"We’re grateful for the assistance from Sheriff’s Office employees and others who helped with this year’s camp. Schering Plough Health Care Corporation and Southwest Tennessee Community College also provided instructors for the camp," says Joyce Anderson, Principal at Klondike Elementary.
Sheriff’s Office employees provide year-round assistance to Klondike Elementary which includes career day activities and mentoring programs. The Sheriff’s Office also sponsors an annual golf tournament that raises money for school equipment and supplies.
“Working side-by-side with the children creates a special bond with the students. We hope our involvement inspires the students to excel school and become productive citizens,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.
The science and engineering camp at the school was directed by Klondike volunteer scientist-in residence, Lynne Jordan Bowers, who also works with the American Camp Association.
Ms. Bowers was assisted by fourth grade teacher Joshua Acker and retired Memphis City Schools principal Nancy Sissman.Steve Shular
