Shelby County Sheriff’s Detectives say a 14 month-old baby boy continues to recover today at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center after he fell last night through a section of bleachers at Memphis Motorsports Park.
Joel Avery, 28, and Carol McGregor, 22, of Southaven, Mississippi were with their son, Clayton Avery, watching the drag races at the racetrack near Millington.
Witnesses told detectives the little boy attempted to lie down on a bench near his parents when he fell through an opening in the bleachers about 8:30. The child fell about 17 feet and landed on the pavement below the seats.
The baby was taken by helicopter to Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center where he continues to be treated for his injuries.
Investigators say the baby’s fall was an accident. Detectives say no charges will be placed against the child’s parents.
Officials at Memphis Motorsports Park have worked closely with Sheriff’s Office during the investigation. “We appreciate the assistance by patrol officers and detectives who quickly responded to the incident. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the family,” said Jason Rittenberry, Vice President and General Manager of Memphis Motorsports Park.
