Undercover Beer Sting Results In Arrests At East Memphis Area Businesses

Sheriff’s Deputies and other officers with the Metro D.U.I. Squad visited businesses in the East Memphis and Raleigh areas this past Friday night.  Clerks at 42% of the locations visited by officers sold alcohol to persons below the legal drinking age of 21. 

On Friday evening, March 24, 2006, Deputies and other officers visited 33 locations, which included convenience stores, grocery stores and liquor stores along Summer Avenue, Covington Pike and Raleigh LaGrange Road.  Clerks at 14 businesses were arrested and given misdemeanor citations for selling beer to minors.

The clerks will have to report to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Jail Annex to be booked and fingerprinted at the Records and Identification Division.  

The sting last Friday night was part of an on-going effort funded by the Governor’s Highway Safety Office to stop the sale of alcohol to minors. 

This was the fifth undercover sting in 2006.

Sheriff’s Deputies and other officers on the Metro D.U.I. Squad which is comprised of officers from the Sheriff’s Office, Memphis Police Department and Germantown Police Department, have arrested 72 people in the stings for selling alcohol to underage persons.
