Undercover Beer Sting Results In Arrests At East Memphis and Germantown Area Businesses

Sheriff’s Deputies and other officers with the Metro D.U.I. Squad visited businesses in the East Memphis and Germantown areas last night.  Clerks at 55% of the locations visited by officers sold alcohol to persons below the legal drinking age of 21. 

On Tuesday evening, May 23, 2006, Deputies and other officers visited 20 locations, which included convenience stores, grocery stores and liquor stores on Poplar, Germantown Parkway and other streets.

Clerks at eleven (11) businesses were arrested and given misdemeanor citations for selling beer to minors.  The clerks will have to report to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Jail Annex to be booked and fingerprinted at the Records and Identification Division.

In all, 13 citations were issued.  Clerks at two of the stores sold beer twice to underage persons.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies and other officers from the Memphis Police Department and Germantown Police Department comprise the Metro D.U.I. Squad.

So far this year, the squad has conducted nine (9) undercover beer stings and has issued 117 citations to clerks for selling alcohol to underage persons.

The sting last night was part of an on-going effort funded by the Governor’s Highway Safety Office to stop the sale of alcohol to minors.
