Arrests during Beer Sting in East Memphis and East Shelby County

Sheriff’s Deputies and other officers with the Metro D.U.I. Squad visited businesses on Highway 64, Whiten Road, Airline Road and other nearby streets in East Memphis and East Shelby County last night.  On Thursday evening, August 17, 2006, Deputies and other officers visited 33 businesses, which included convenience stores, grocery stores and liquor stores.

Eight (8) clerks were cited for selling beer to persons below the legal drinking age of 21. The clerks were issued Misdemeanor Citations and will have to report to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Jail Annex to be booked and fingerprinted at the Records and Identification Division.

The Horizon Travel Center at 4935 Arline Road in Arlington was one of the locations where beer was sold last evening. That store had just been granted permission to sell beer again yesterday morning.

The store had received a 30 day suspension from the Arlington Beer Board on July 18, 2006.  Undercover D.U.I. officers had visited the store on May 31, 2006, and observed a clerk sell beer to a person under 18.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies and other officers from the Memphis Police Department and Germantown Police Department comprise the Metro D.U.I. Squad.

So far this year, the squad has conducted 18 undercover beer stings and 239 clerks have been issued citations or arrested for selling alcohol to underage persons.

Last evening’s sting was part of an on-going effort funded by the Governor’s Highway Safety Office to stop the sale of alcohol to minors.
