Metro DUI Squad Cites Clerks in Orange Mound Area Beer Sting

Release Date: April 23, 2008

The Metro D.U.I. Squad conducted an undercover “beer sting” in the Orange Mound neighborhood last night. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the Germantown Police Department comprise the Metro D.U.I. Squad.

Officers noted violations of the beer and alcohol laws at 53% of the 19 businesses visited. The sting targeted convenience stores, grocery stores, service station marts and liquor stores on Highland, Park and other nearby streets.

Officers witnessed 10 clerks sell beer to people under the legal alcohol drinking age of 21. Merchants must check the identification of every customer who buys beer for off-site consumption.

Clerks who received the citations will have to report to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Jail Annex to be booked and fingerprinted at the Records and Identification Division.

2008 Statistics:

  • Beer Stings Conducted: 5
  • Total Arrests: 42

Last night’s beer sting was part of an on-going effort funded by the Governor’s Highway Safety Office to stop the sale of alcohol to minors.
