Clerks Cited In North Memphis Area Beer Sting
Release Date: August 23, 2007
The Metro D.U.I. Squad conducted an undercover “beer sting” in North Memphis last evening (August 23). Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies and other officers from the Germantown Police Department comprise the Metro D.U.I. Squad.
Officers noted violations at 30% of the 27 businesses visited. The sting targeted convenience stores, service station marts and liquor stores on Chelsea, Jackson and other nearby streets.
Officers witnessed 8 clerks sell beer to people under the legal alcohol drinking age of 21. The clerks will have to report to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Jail Annex to be booked and fingerprinted at the Records and Identification Division.
2007 Statistics:
- Beer Stings Conducted: 11
- Total Arrests: 117
Last night’s sting was part of an on-going effort funded by the Governor’s Highway Safety Office to stop the sale of alcohol to minors. It’s important to note that all merchants must now check the identification of EVERY customer who buys beer for off-site consumption.
