Release Date: February 16, 2007
The Metro D.U.I. Squad conducted an undercover “beer sting” in East Memphis last night along Poplar Avenue and other nearby streets. Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies and other officers from the Germantown Police Department comprise the Metro D.U.I. Squad.
Twenty-four (24) businesses were visited which included convenience stores, service station marts and liquor stores. Of the 24 visits, 46% led to arrests.
Eleven (11) clerks were cited for selling beer to persons below the legal drinking age of 21. The clerks were issued Misdemeanor Citations and will have to report to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Jail Annex to be booked and fingerprinted at the Records and Identification Division.
This was the 2nd beer sting in 2007. So far this year, the Metro D.U.I. Squad has arrested 21 clerks for selling alcohol to persons under the legal drinking age of 21.
Last night’s sting was part of an on-going effort funded by the Governor’s Highway Safety Office to stop the sale of alcohol to minors.
