Undercover Beer Sting Results In Violations At North Memphis Area Businesses

Sheriff’s Deputies and other officers with the Metro D.U.I. Squad visited businesses in the North Memphis area this past Friday night. Clerks at almost all of the locations visited by officers sold alcohol to persons below the legal drinking age of 21.

On Friday evening, February 24, 2006, Deputies and other officers visited 20 locations, which included convenience stores, grocery stores and liquor stores along Chelsea, Hollywood, Thomas and Jackson Avenue. Clerks at 15 businesses sold beer to minors.

Of those clerks arrested for selling alcohol to underage customers, 13 received misdemeanor citations and will have to report to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Jail Annex to be booked and fingerprinted at the Records and Identification Division.

Three (3) other clerks were arrested. One was charged with disorderly conduct. Another clerk was taken to jail for not having proper identification. Finally, a juvenile standing in for a clerk at one of the stores was issued a juvenile summons and taken to Juvenile Court for selling beer to an underage customer.

The sting last Friday night was part of an on-going effort funded by the Governor’s Highway Safety Office to stop the sale of alcohol to minors.

This was the third undercover sting this year. Sheriff’s Deputies and other officers on the Metro D.U.I. Squad have arrested 44 people for selling alcohol to underage persons.
