Restaurant Employees Cited In East Memphis Beer Sting

The Metro D.U.I. Squad conducted an undercover “beer sting” in East Memphis last evening. Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies and other officers from the Germantown Police Department comprise the Metro D.U.I. Squad.
Acting on tips from citizens, Officers visited several restaurants along Poplar Avenue, Brookhaven Circle and other streets to see if customers under the legal drinking age of 21 were served beer.
Violations were noted at 48% of the restaurants visited. Officers went to 21 restaurants and ten (10) employees were observed selling beer to underage customers. The employees were issued Misdemeanor Citations which require them to be booked in the Records and Identification Bureau at the Shelby County Jail. Those arrested also face a mandatory court appearance.

Last night’s sting was part of an on-going effort funded by the Governor’s Highway Safety Office to stop the sale of alcohol to minors.
