Clerks Cited In North Memphis Beer Sting
Release Date: November 26, 2007
The Metro D.U.I. Squad conducted an undercover “beer sting” in North Memphis and Frayser this past Saturday, November 24. Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies and other officers from the Germantown Police Department comprise the Metro D.U.I. Squad.
Officers noted violations of the beer and alcohol laws at 54% of the 24 businesses visited. The sting targeted convenience stores, grocery stores, service station marts and liquor stores on Thomas, Chelsea, North Watkins and other nearby streets.
Officers witnessed 4 clerks sell beer to people under the legal alcohol drinking age of 21. There were 9 other clerks who sold beer without checking the identification of the customers. All of the clerks will have to report to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Jail Annex to be booked and fingerprinted at the Records and Identification Division.
2007 Statistics:
- Beer Stings Conducted: 13
- Total Arrests: 138
Last weekend’s sting was part of an on-going effort funded by the Governor’s Highway Safety Office to stop the sale of alcohol to minors. It’s important to note that all merchants must check the identification of EVERY customer who buys beer for off-site consumption.
