Clerks Cited In South-East Memphis Beer Sting
Release Date: November 8, 2007
The Metro D.U.I. Squad conducted an undercover “beer sting” in South-East Memphis last evening (November 7). Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies and other officers from the Germantown Police Department comprise the Metro D.U.I. Squad.
Officers noted violations at 38% of the 21 businesses visited. The sting targeted convenience stores, service station marts and liquor stores on Mt. Moriah, Mendenhall and other nearby streets.
Officers witnessed 8 clerks sell beer to people under the legal alcohol drinking age of 21. The clerks will have to report to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Jail Annex to be booked and fingerprinted at the Records and Identification Division.
2007 Statistics:
- Beer Stings Conducted: 12
- Total Arrests: 125
Last night’s sting was part of an on-going effort funded by the Governor’s Highway Safety Office to stop the sale of alcohol to minors. It’s important to note that all merchants must now check the identification of EVERY customer who buys beer for off-site consumption.
