Convenience Store and Liquor Store Employees Receive Citations In Beer Sting

Officers with the Metro D.U.I. Squad went undercover this past Friday evening and found clerks at 12 stores selling alcohol to persons under the legal drinking age of 21.
Deputies and other officers visited 49 convenience stores and liquor stores on Winchester Road in South Memphis and stores in the Frayser area in North Memphis.
Clerks at 12 of those stores sold beer to customers below 21 years of age. Those clerks given misdemeanor citations will have to report to the Shelby County Jail to be booked and fingerprinted.
Officers say the undercover beer stings have been successful by creating more awareness about the problem of underage beer sales.
Metro D.U.I. officers went to 20 of the same businesses along Winchester Road back in April of this year. In that sting, 75 percent of the stores were in violation.
In this past weekend’s sting, only 25 percent of the clerks at those 20 establishments on Winchester Road sold beer without checking the identification of the customers.
