Officers with the Metro D.U.I. Unit visited businesses throughout parts of Memphis this past weekend and cited clerks and others for selling beer to minors.
A total of 77 businesses were visited. At thirty-three (33) locations, officers observed beer being sold to those under the legal drinking age of 21.
Officers with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Memphis Police Department and Germantown Police Department who are assigned to the Metro D.U.I. Unit, visited businesses along Summer Avenue from North Parkway to Sycamore View this past Friday evening (April 22).
Then on Saturday evening (April 23), undercover officers continued their sting at businesses in South Memphis along Elvis Presley from Lamar to Shelby Drive.
Thirty-two (32) misdemeanor citations were issued to clerks who will be required to go to the Shelby County Jail for booking and fingerprinting. One other person was issued a citation for offering to buy beer for a minor. Three other clerks who sold beer to minors were physically arrested. They did not have identification to prove residency in Tennessee.
Officers involved in the stings are paid through the Governor’s Highway Safety Office Youth Alcohol Grant. The beer stings are part of a continuing effort by the Metro D.U.I. Unit to curb the sale of alcohol to minors in Memphis and Shelby County.
