Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Investigators say a bicyclist was run over today as he rode along a sidewalk in South-East Shelby County.
Deputies say just after 2 p.m., Alex McQuown, 24, of Memphis, was riding his Fuji bicycle north on a sidewalk along South Germantown Road. That’s when a 1991 Chevy pick-up truck going south on South Germantown Road, veered across the road, jumped a curb, and hit the bicyclist head-on.
McQuown was air-lifted to The Regional Medical Center where he is in stable condition this evening. He was not wearing a safety helmet.
After the collision, the truck then continued through two yards finally coming to rest in the flowerbed of a yard at 4346 South Germantown. The homeowner was not hurt.
The driver of the pick-up truck, Christopher Still, 39, of Memphis, told Deputies he fell asleep at the wheel. Containers of beer and liquor were in the cab of the pick-up truck. Investigators say some of the containers were open.
Still has been charged with DUI and refusing to submit to a blood-alcohol test.
Deputies say Still will also be charged with Driving While Being A Habitual Motor Vehicle Offender. He also faces, Violation of the Open-Container Law, and Violation of the Financial Responsibility Law for driving without insurance.
Deputies will present the case to the Shelby County District Attorney General’s Office who will determine if Still will face a specific charge for colliding with the bicyclist.
