Youth mentor programs to be the focus of Sheriff's Office meeting with Big Brothers and Big Sisters

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office is hoping to strengthen its partnership with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters youth program.

Officials from Big Brothers and Big Sisters will be at the Shelby County Jail tomorrow to encourage more employees to mentor children and youth. During the meeting, employees from the Sheriff's Office who currently serve as mentors will be recognized for their service.

The event calls attention to the importance of children having adults in their lives to help them with school work, hobbies and other life skills. The goal is to reduce the chances of children turning to crime in later life.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at 11:00 a. m. Sheriff Mark Luttrell Jr. and Chief Jailer Joe Ponte will make brief remarks along with Mrs. Adrienne Bailey, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Memphis, Inc.

The Media is asked to be at the jail at 201 Poplar by 10:30 a. m. to go through checkpoints. Personnel from the jail will escort you to the meeting.
