Bicycle Rider Critically Hurt In Hit and Run Crash

Release Date: September 30, 2004

Traffic investigators with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office are looking for the person who critically injured a bicycle rider in the Cordova area earlier this week.

Deputies say just after 6 p.m. Tuesday evening, Steven Schaffer, 55, of Cordova, was riding his bicycle in the westbound lane of Raleigh LaGrange near Estacada Way. Witnesses say a blue Jeep Liberty crashed into the bike as Schaffer was riding along the side of the road.

Witnesses say the woman driver initially stopped and appeared to check on Schaffer. She then got back into the vehicle and drove away.

Deputies are looking for a woman with a light complexion. Witnesses say a male child was also in the SUV with her. Neither of them was apparently hurt.

Investigators say the blue jeep should have damage to the right passenger side including the mirror.

Steven Schaffer remains in critical condition today at The Regional Medical Center.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Division at (901) 867-1420.
