Traffic Enforcement Effort Today on Bill Morris Parkway Yields more than 200 Speeding Citations

Release Date: February 13, 2004

Shelby County Sheriff Mark Luttrell, Jr. says the traffic enforcement effort on Bill Morris Parkway this morning was a great “first step” in an on-going effort to slow down motorists on the busy roadway.

“Our officers, along with the assistance of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Collierville Police Department and Memphis Police Department, sent a clear message to drivers this morning. If you travel on Bill Morris Parkway, you need to follow the speed limit,” said Sheriff Luttrell.

The enforcement effort yielded 233 citations. Here is the breakdown by agency:

  • Shelby County Sheriff's Office — 170 citations
  • Tennessee Highway Patrol — 20 citations
  • Memphis Police Department — 25
  • Collierville Police Department — 18 citations

Sheriff's deputies say one driver was traveling more than 100 miles per hour when he was stopped this morning. He was arrested and charged with reckless driving and driving on a revoked license. Officers conducted the enforcement today from 7 a.m. to just after 1 p.m. The 14.4 mile roadway runs from the Interstate 240 inter-change in East Memphis, through East Shelby County, to where the roadway ends in Collierville.

Speeding is a traffic safety problem on Bill Morris Parkway. In 2003, 53 crashes happened on this roadway. One person was killed and eight people were injured in those crashes. Statistics indicate several crashes happened during morning and afternoon rush hours, especially on Mondays and Fridays. This was the first in a joint-agency effort by officers to enforce the speed limits on Bill Morris Parkway.
