Shelby County Sheriff's Detectives have charged a man with Second Degree Murder for killing an Atoka, Tennessee woman.

Melvin Shorty, 59, told Sheriff’s detectives he got into an argument last night with Dorothy Brown, 45.

Brown was visiting his home at 8171 O’Neill in the Godwin neighborhood in North-East Shelby County.

Sheriff’s detectives say about 8:30, the argument escalated and Brown was shot in the face. She died at the scene.

Shorty is being held at the Shelby County Jail without bond.

Last night’s murder was the 6th homicide investigated by Shelby County Sheriffs’ Deputies in 2007.

Three people were murdered in neighborhoods patrolled by Sheriff’s Deputies in 2006.
