Shelby County Sheriff’s Office to partner with the Greater Mid-South Jaycees to assist children traumatized by crime

Release Date: July 7, 2003

Children who are the victims of crime and other traumatic events investigated by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office will be comforted thanks to the generosity of the Greater Mid-South Jaycees. Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr. will be receiving approximately 100 stuffed teddy bears at the Jaycees’ monthly meeting to be held on Monday, July 14, 2003 in East Memphis.

“We can’t thank the Jaycees enough for their desire to help children. Our deputies see children each day who are at scene of crimes or involved in automobile accidents. It’s amazing how a stuffed animal can quickly calm the fear of a child who’s been through an upsetting event,” said Sheriff Luttrell.

This past March, a bowling fund raiser to pay for the bears was held at Billy Hardwick’s Lanes on Quince Road. The stuffed bears will be placed in the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office squad cars so they can be given to the children when an event happens.

“We feel being a partner with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is a wonderful way to help children. Service is the hallmark of the Jaycees. This opportunity fulfills our organization’s goal to make a difference in our community,” said Brian Ueleke, President of the Greater Mid-South Jaycees.

Mr. Ueleke will make the presentation of the stuffed bears to Sheriff Luttrell on July 14, 2003, 6:30 p.m., at Buckley’s Lunch Box restaurant at 919 South Yates Road.
