Burglars Targeting Churches
Release Date: March 9, 2005
Detectives with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office say 16 vehicles were broken into at two churches in East Shelby County last weekend. Investigators say eleven vehicles were burglarized at the Community of Christ Church at 3549 Brunswick Road and five vehicles were vandalized at the Wolfchase Church at 3275 Brunswick Road.
Detectives say witnesses reported two men with dark complexions driving a Ford Taurus, possibly gold or silver in color, were seen near the church lots at the time of the burglaries, which occurred between 10 a.m. and Noon. No one was hurt during the incidents. The vehicles were not occupied at the time of the burglaries. However, cell phones and other personal items were taken by the thieves.
Sheriff’s Deputies offer these tips to help reduce the chances of being a victim of a car burglary:
- Lock your vehicle.
- Don’t leave purses, cell phones or other valuables in your vehicle.
- Letters, credit card receipts and documents that contain personal information should not be kept anywhere in the vehicle.
- Vandals will break into glove boxes and trunks.
Area churches are urged to have security officers or other staff members monitoring the parking lots. The Sheriff’s Office has additional deputies working undercover near churches in hopes of finding those responsible for the vehicle burglaries.
