Bus driver charged in accident that injured a six-year-old child
Release Date: January 10, 2003
The driver of a Shelby County school bus has been charged with Failure to Maintain a Safe Lookout in connection with an accident involving a six-year-old girl.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department says 61-year-old Barbara Deprey of Memphis was driving the bus that injured the girl shortly after 4 p.m. this afternoon in East Shelby County.
The little girl, a student at Macon Hall Elementary School, had just gotten off the school bus in front of 9754 Woodland View Lane near the intersection of Houston Levee at Macon.
Witnesses told traffic investigators the little girl ran in front of the bus just as it pulled away from unloading the children. Routine tests will be conducted on the driver for the presence of drugs or alcohol.
The little girl, who was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center, suffered a broken ankle. Officials with the hospital say the child is in satisfactory condition and expected to be released sometime this evening.
