Citations Given To Store Clerks In Weekend Beer Sting

Release Date: July 26, 2004

Officers with the Metro D.U. I. Unit continued their efforts to stop the illegal sale of beer to minors this past weekend. Clerks at five area convenience stores were arrested on Saturday, July 24, 2004.

Investigators say they conducted the sting after receiving information that clerks at several area convenience stores were not checking customer identifications before selling beer.

Acting on the information, Metro D.U.I. officers decided to go undercover into the businesses. They sent several underage adults into the stores to buy beer.

State law requires customers to be at least 21 years of age to buy beer. If there is any question about a person’s age, clerks are required to check his or her identification before any beer is sold.

During the sting, in both Memphis and areas of Shelby County, six citations were written. Officers cited one clerk twice for selling beer to minors.

Metro D.U.I. officers say their investigation into underage beer sales in Memphis and Shelby County is on-going.
