Shelby County Sheriff's Office Will Graduate First Citizens Academy Class on November 25, 2003

Release Date: November 24, 2003

Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr. will honor 17 community leaders who have participated in the first Shelby County Sheriff's Office Citizens Academy. The citizens will receive their graduation certificates tomorrow evening at 8:00 at the Sheriff's Office Training Academy at 993 Dovecrest.

For the past eight weeks, citizens have attended class once a week for three hours. The sessions have included lectures, discussions and in-person visits to various Sheriff's Office divisions including the Shelby County Jail. Several citizens also chose to ride in squad cars to see the challenges officers face as they patrol the streets.

The Sheriff's Office is now taking applications for classes in 2004. Participants must pass a background check to be eligible for the Citizens Academy. People who are interested in being a part of the next class should call the Shelby County Crime Prevention Office at 867-1401.
