Memphis Convenience Store Clerks Arrested In Weekend Beer Sting

Release Date: November 1, 2004

Officers with the Metro D.U. I. Unit continued their efforts to stop the illegal sale of beer to minors this past weekend. Clerks at 14 Memphis convenience stores in Whitehaven and South Memphis were arrested on Friday evening, October 29, 2004.

For the last several months, D.U.I. officers have been going into stores undercover with underage adults. They’ve been checking to see if clerks are checking customer identifications before they sell beer.

State law requires customers to be at least 21 years of age to buy beer. If there is any question about a person’s age, clerks are required to check his or her identification before any beer is sold.

Besides selling beer to a minor, the clerk at the BP station at 5615 Elvis Presley was arrested for gambling. He, along with the manager and four customers, were taken into custody. Six video poker gambling machines were seized at the store during the beer sting.

The store manager also faces drug charges for possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Metro D.U.I. officers say their investigation into underage beer sales in Memphis and Shelby County will be on-going.
