Release Date: June 3, 2007
A man was killed today after he kicked open a door at the home of his former girlfriend near Cordova.
Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the house in the 1200 block of Breezy Gate Drive in East Shelby County just after 8 o'clock this morning. They found Jeremy Kyle, 27, shot to death near a downstairs bedroom.
The woman who lives at the house, Teresita Watson, also 27, told Sheriff’s Detectives the intruder was her former boyfriend.
She said after Kyle kicked open the backdoor of her home, he walked to the bedroom and pointed a gun at her and another man who was with her, Justin Davis, 22, of Memphis.
Watson told investigators she struggled with Kyle to get the gun out of his hand. That’s when Davis fired his personal gun. Kyle was shot in the chest. Another bullet from Davis’s gun grazed Watson’s stomach area. Watson was treated and released from the Regional Medical Center. Davis was not hurt.
Watson’s three young children, ages 3, 5 and 9 years-old, were upstairs in a bedroom. They were not hurt.
After interviewing Watson and Davis, Sheriff’s detectives say Davis admitted shooting Kyle when he aimed the gun at him and Watson.
Investigators say until recently, Kyle lived at the house with Watson.
Sheriff's Deputies had been called to the house before today's shooting. On April 20, 2007, Watson and Kyle were involved in an argument but it was settled without anyone being arrested.
Also on December 31, 2006, Deputies were called to the Breezy Gate Drive address when Kyle removed some belongings from the house. No one was arrested in that incident.
Watson had not filed a restraining order against Kyle.
Jeremy Kyle and Teresita Watson worked with each other as officers at the Memphis Police Department. Both were off-duty at the time of this morning's shooting.
No charges have been filed against Davis.
This is the fifth homicide investigated by Shelby County Sheriff's Deputies this year.
