Student Fights At Cordova High School Injure A Shelby County Deputy And A Student- Eleven Students Arrested

Release Date: December 8, 2004

Three fights between members of two rival gangs who attend Cordova High School led to a School Resource Deputy and another student being treated for injuries today. Eleven (11) students were involved, ten boys and one girl. The girl is 16. Five boys are 16, four are 17, and one other boy is 14-years-old.

It all began at the school just before 8 o'clock this morning. Cordova High School is located at 1800 Berryhill Road in East Shelby County. The first fight started just inside the building near the main entrance. Soon after that fight was stopped, another fight started near the elevator. Teachers and coaches were able to get that fight under control in just a matter of minutes.

Then, all of the students involved in the two fights were taken to an administrative office away from other students. When counselors were talking to them about what happened, another fight broke out.

As School Resource Deputy Heath Mains attempted to break up the fight, a student hit Deputy Mains in the face with his fist. Deputy Mains was not seriously hurt. Also during the fight, another student received minor injuries.

Officers with the Metro Gang Unit were called to the school to help administrators and teachers maintain order. During their investigation, Metro Gang Officers found counterfeit money on one of the students involved in the fights. All eleven students have now been charged with disorderly conduct. Some of the students have additional charges. Two have been charged with assaulting a police officer. Another student was charged with two counts of forgery for possessing counterfeit $20 bills.
