Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Deputies say a man was critically hurt this afternoon after his car crashed in the Cordova area.

Deputies say just after three o’clock the man was driving east in the 1100 block of Averett Lane near Forest Hill-Irene Road.  The 1999 BMW veered off the road, crashed through a fence and hit a utility tower.

The man was rushed to the Regional Medical Center by helicopter. No other persons were in the vehicle and no other vehicles were involved.

Deputies say the man was wearing his seatbelt.  However, investigators have not determined why the man lost control of the vehicle.

The driver’s name is not being released until his family is notified.
