A Corrections Deputy with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office died early this morning while on duty at Jail East, the women’s facility of the Shelby County Jail.
Corrections Deputy Daniel Thorpe, 44, who worked the 10 p.m. – 6 a.m. shift, collapsed just after six this morning as he walked down a hallway of Jail East at 6201 Haley Road.
His fellow employees attempted to revive him but were not successful. Corrections Deputy Thorpe was pronounced dead a short time later at Baptist East Hospital.
“All of us at the Sheriff’s Office extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Corrections Deputy Thorpe. He was a dedicated public servant,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.
“Corrections Deputy Thorpe was a kind-hearted man who was highly thought of by his fellow employees. He will be missed,” said Chief Jailer James Coleman.
Thorpe leaves behind a wife and two children.
