Traffic Crash Injures Teenager
Release Date: November 13, 2006
Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Deputies say a 17 year-old girl on her way to Cordova High School was seriously injured this morning in a two-vehicle crash in Cordova.
Just after 7 o’clock, the teenager was driving a 1997 Hyundai Accent south on Berryhill Road. Witnesses said her car briefly crossed into the opposing lane of traffic.
As she attempted to correct her steering, her car was hit by a 2002 Ford Focus driven by Roberto Torres, 30, of Cordova. He, his wife and two children were in that vehicle.
The teenager was seriously injured and taken by helicopter to The Regional Medical Center where she remains in serious condition. She was not wearing a seatbelt. No one else was in her vehicle.
Investigators say all four members of the Torres family had their seatbelts on, including two small children who were in child restraint seats. No one in that vehicle was injured.
Deputies say the teenager was not speeding. So far, no charges have been placed against her.
