Release Date: June 23, 2004

Steven MorrowA Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jailer has been charged with making illegal copies of movies and other shows. At least one of those pirated films was shown to inmates at the Shelby County Jail women’s facility.

The investigation began earlier this week after a former inmate at Jail East reported seeing “The Passion of the Christ”, while she was incarcerated. The movie has not yet been released to the public on DVD or video tape.

Acting on that information from the inmate, which had been reported to WMC-TV in Memphis, the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Bureau of Professional Standards and Integrity interviewed more than 100 inmates at Jail East.

Deputy Jailer Steven Morrow, 36, has been charged with Criminal Simulation, which is a felony. Investigators got a warrant to search Morrow’s home this past Tuesday evening. They found several pirated films along with elaborate DVD duplicating equipment and detailed ordering lists for more than 100 movies. Some illegally copied music CDs were also at the home.

Deputy Jailer Morrow has been employed at the Sheriff’s Office since 1997. He has been relieved of duty with pay pending the outcome of the investigation which is on-going.
