Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Detectives have caught up with a man believed to be responsible for breaking into as many as 40 vehicles in Memphis and Shelby County during the past year.

Deputies in the Sheriff’s Office “Street Crimes Unit”, “A.L.E.R.T. Unit” (Area Law Enforcement Retailers Team) and Officers in the United States Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force captured Brandon Hughes, 29, of Memphis, last evening about 6 o’clock. Hughes was arrested at a friend’s house in the 1900 block of Lamar.

Detectives assigned to the Sheriff’s “Street Crimes Unit” and General Investigation Bureau had been tracking Hughes for months. He had been linked to the vehicle burglaries earlier this year after investigators arrested his alleged accomplice, Marcellus Mason, 25, of Memphis, back in February.

Sheriff’s Detectives believe Mason and Hughes began a crime spree last fall by cruising through parking lots at Shelby Farms, restaurants, hotels and sporting events and then breaking into the vehicles.

This past December, 30 vehicles were burglarized during the Liberty Bowl game in the area surrounding the stadium. When Mason was arrested back in February, Deputies discovered he had a variety of cell phones, electronic equipment and other items that had been stolen from the vehicles there and at other locations throughout Shelby County.

Hughes is being held at the Shelby County Jail on $400,000 bond. He has been charged with three counts of Identify Theft, two counts of Stolen Property $1,000-$10,000 (vehicle theft) and one count of Burglary of a Motor Vehicle.

Mason is currently in a Tennessee Department of Corrections facility being held on a parole violation as well as the vehicle burglaries.
