Deputies Charge Sister of Jail Inmate Who Escaped

Release Date: October 14, 2004

Felicia BondsShelby County Sheriff’s Detectives have charged the sister of Greg Riley, the inmate who escaped last weekend at the Shelby County Jail, with helping hide him during his brief time away from jail.

Felicia Bonds, 30, was taken into custody about 9:15 last night after she was questioned by investigators. Detectives say Bonds, a Licensed Practical Nurse at Cordova Rehabilitation Nursing Home, treated Riley’s injuries after he was cut by razor wire as he escaped from the jail Sunday evening.

Detectives say Bonds also took her brother to a Millington area motel and paid for his room for the two days he was on the run. Riley was captured Tuesday of this week by Fugitive and Metro Gang Unit Deputies.

Jailers discovered Riley missing about nine o’clock Sunday evening. He never returned to his cell after being at the jail’s outdoor gym on the Fifth Floor earlier in the evening. It was discovered he had gotten to the roof of the Criminal Justice Center by scaling a security fence topped with barbed wire. He then lowered himself down the side of the building with bed sheets.

Shelby County Sheriff Mark Luttrell says a thorough investigation is continuing about how Riley was able to escape from the jail.

Felicia Bonds has been charged with being an Accessory After The Fact To Wit Escape, a Felony.
