Deputies with two Shelby County Sheriff’s Office bureaus worked together to arrest four people who planned to rob a South Memphis business this week. The would-be robbers are father and son, another relative and a family friend.

The plot unfolded this past Monday, May 19, when Deputies received a tip the four planned to rob Pyramid Auto Sales at 936 South Third.

Deputies say James Thomas, 53, planned the robbery.  Thomas contacted his cousin, Eddie Galloway, 50.  Galloway then recruited his son, Robert Adell, 25, and a family friend, Gregory Toney, 44.  All of the men live in Memphis.

The tipster told Deputies the men planned to rob the auto business about 6 p.m. the next day, Tuesday, May 20th.

Deputies from the ALERT (Area Law Enforcement Retailers Team) and Street Crimes bureaus were waiting for the suspects.  Deputies spotted the four men in two cars on South Third about a ½ mile from the business.  Officers stopped the cars at South Third and McLemore only 30 minutes from the time the robbery was to happen. Deputies found a loaded gun in the car with Galloway and Toney.  Toney was to use the pistol during the robbery.

Eddie Galloway and Gregory Toney have been charged with:

  • Convicted felon in possession of a handgun
  • Criminal conspiracy to wit aggravated robbery
  • Criminal attempt to wit aggravated robbery

Robert Adell, Galloway’s son, and his 2nd cousin, James Thomas, have been charged with:

  • Criminal conspiracy to wit aggravated robbery
  • Criminal attempt to wit aggravated robbery
