Deputies Foil Armed Robbery At Memphis Check Cashing Business

Release Date: July 7, 2006

An anonymous tip to Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Deputies prevented the armed robbery of an East Memphis check cashing business earlier this week.

Moments before the business was to be held-up, Deputies and other officers with the “Project Safe Neighborhoods Task Force” arrested three men and later arrested two other men, one who worked for Memphis area bail-bonding companies, who arranged the alleged robbery.

The investigation began last week when a Deputy with the Sheriff’s Office ALERT Squad (Area Law Enforcement Retailers Team) received a tip that the business was to be robbed.

When the would-be robbers arrived at the Golden Title and Loans business at 1538 Getwell Road about 11 o’clock this past Monday morning (July 3), Sheriff’s ALERT Squad Deputies and other officers swarmed the robbers’ vehicle and took them into custody.  The robbers’ vehicle, a Toyota Camry, had been stolen recently in the Memphis area.

When arrested, the robbers had guns, gloves and a ski mask that were to be used during the hold-up.

Deputies have charged all five men in connection with the scheme.  The three would-be robbers arrested in the parking lot of the check cashing business are all from the Memphis area.
