Deputies Issue Violations in "Hands Across the Border" Safety Initiative

Teams of Shelby County Deputies fanned out across South-East Shelby County last night during the “Hands Across the Border” traffic safety initiative.  Deputies joined Memphis Police Officers, Tennessee State Troopers and other law enforcement agencies in the regional enforcement effort.

Sheriff’s Deputies conducted safety “checkpoints” near the intersections of Germantown/Winchester and Riverdale/Stateline Road.  Deputies issued 51 violations and two (2) people were arrested.  Here are the results:

Regular/Courtesy Violations: 51

  • Seat Belts 18
  • Improper Window Tint  8
  • State Registration 7
  • Child Restraint Under 4 Years-Old 6
  • Vehicle Equipment Violations 3
  • Speeding 3
  • No Insurance 2
  • Revoked License 2
  • Other Non-Moving Violations 2

Arrests: 2 

  • Driving on a Suspended License 1
  • Driving on a Revoked License 1

Last night’s enforcement initiative was the official start of the “Hands Across the Border” enforcement program coordinated by the Governor's Highway Safety Office. 

Law enforcement agencies in Tennessee and other states will conduct safety checkpoints throughout the summer to spot drivers who are speeding, impaired by alcohol and drugs or not using seat belts.

Grant money from the Governor’s Highway Safety Office is used to pay officers who work during the additional traffic enforcement initiatives.
