Deputy Donald McDonald

Deputy Donald McDonald

A Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputy narrowly escaped injuries today after his squad car was rammed by three men who burglarized a home in North-East Shelby County.

Just before eleven o’clock this morning, Sheriff’s Deputy Donald McDonald responded to a burglary-in-progress call at 5458 Sungrove Circle North.  The neighborhood is bordered by Memphis and Bartlett.

As Deputy McDonald arrived at the home, two men ran out the front door and got into a maroon Kia sedan.  Deputy McDonald positioned his squad car to block the getaway vehicle.  That’s when the driver backed down the driveway and crashed into the front passenger side door of the squad car.  Deputy McDonald was not hurt.

With the squad car still drivable, Deputy McDonald pursued the three men for a short time before they got away.  Just before two o’clock this afternoon, Deputies found the rented Kia abandoned in the 3400 block of Hadley near the Park and Highland area.

Sheriff’s detectives say the burglars had kicked open the front door and ransacked the house.  The homeowner, who was not there at the time, told investigators the burglars took two semiautomatic pistols, an Intertec Tec-9 and another 9 mm pistol. The burglars also stole several CDs and DVDs.

Deputies have impounded the vehicle used in the burglary and will search it for any items that might have been taken from the home.

Here are descriptions of the two men seen leaving the house:
