Deputy's Squad Car Rammed By Drug Suspect During Pursuit

Deputy Jeremy FinchA Shelby County Sheriff's Deputy escaped injuries today after a suspect he was pursuing rammed his vehicle into the officer's squad car.

About 1:15 this afternoon, Deputy Jeremy Finch had just completed a traffic stop on Sledge Road near Millington. While talking to the driver of the stopped vehicle, a car driven by Dale Hines, 30, of Memphis, sped past Deputy Finch and almost collided with another vehicle.

Deputy Finch then got into his squad car and followed Hines' car to the intersection of Sledge at Navy where the vehicle pulled over to the side of the road. As Deputy Finch approached the driver of the car, the car sped away.

Deputy Finch then pursued the vehicle. He stopped the pursuit on two occasions, but then came upon the vehicle which had fallen behind slower moving traffic.

Hines was followed to Helene Road where he made a sudden turn onto Helene Cove. It was there Hines rammed his gray mustang into the grill and front bumper of Deputy Finch's squad car. Deputy Finch was not hurt.

Hines, and another person in the car, Shamus Pringle, 30, of Millington, both got out and attempted to run away. Deputies caught up with both of the men who were not armed.

Investigators searched the men and found cocaine and close to $1500 cash in Hines' pockets. Hines has been charged with aggravated assault against the deputy, evading arrest, possession of a controlled substance and several traffic related violations.

Shamus Pringle has been charged with evading arrest.
