A Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputy’s squad car was rammed three times early this morning as he and other officers pursued three young men in a stolen vehicle.
Just after 12:30 this morning, Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Kraemer drove through the parking lot of the Texaco Food Mart on Raines at Riverdale. Three young men noticed the squad car and quickly got into a gold 1999 Jeep Cherokee and drove away.
Based on their suspicious behavior, Deputy Kraemer followed the vehicle and determined it had been stolen earlier this year on May 28. Moments later, the Cherokee stopped on Meadow Chase Lane, near Meadow Heath, and two passengers got out of the car.
That’s when Deputy Kraemer turned on his blue lights and attempted to stop the vehicle. However, the Cherokee sped away.
Several Deputies then joined the half-hour pursuit through various South-East Shelby County neighborhoods. While attempting to box-in the stolen vehicle on Riverdale and Winchester, Deputy Jarrett Parks’ squad car was rammed twice on the right passenger side. The suspect rammed the squad car a third time on Eggleston Road, hitting the back bumper. Deputy Parks was not hurt and the squad car had only minor damage.
The pursuit continued with Deputies and Memphis Police Officers following the car to the 4100 block of Sassafras River Drive. That’s where the suspect jumped out of the Cherokee and was quickly captured by Deputy Cedric Leake and his Sheriff’s Office K9, “Benny.”
The teenager was treated for minor injures at the scene and then taken to Juvenile Court. He faces three counts of aggravated assault along with other charges including reckless endangerment, evading arrest, possession of stolen property and several traffic violations.
Deputies later questioned the two young men who got out of the stolen car on Meadow Chase Lane. They have not been charged.
