Former Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputy Sherry Goodman To Be Honored In Northaven Next Week

Sherry GoodmanSheriff’s Deputy Sherry Hopper Goodman, who was killed in the line of duty on July 26, 1996, will be honored next week at a ceremony in the Northaven Community.

On Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at 4:00 p.m., Northaven resident Reverend Eric Boyland, who pastors the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Somerville, along with other Northaven residents, will place a wreath in Sherry Hopper Goodman Park on Breckenwood Drive near Circle Road.

Deputy Goodman, who was 38 at the time of her death, was shot in her squad car by a man she was taking to the Shelby County Jail. The prisoner was apprehended eight hours later and convicted of First Degree Murder and sentenced to life without parole.

Next week’s ceremony will commemorate Deputy Goodman’s life and service to the community. Her family, many friends, fellow Deputies and the command staff at the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office have been invited to the ceremony.
