Double Murder Charges

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office has charged a Memphis man with the murder of two people in South-East Shelby County last week.

Deputies have charged 19-year-old Derrick D. Settles of 3536 Tall Oaks Circle #7 in South Memphis with the following:

  • 2 counts-First Degree Murder
  • 2 counts-Unlawful Possession of a Firearm
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance with the intent to Manufacture, Deliver or Sell

Derrick SettlesEarly last Thursday morning (December 5, 2002) Deputies were called to a house at 5301 Farm View Road. Investigators say a couple living in the house reported seeing a car with two people in the driveway. Upon looking inside the car, which was running with the headlights on, investigators found 24 year old Sean L. Williams and 19 year-old Jamie Crawford, both of Memphis, shot in the head. Detectives say the murders are apparently drug related.

Last evening, deputies went to Derrick Settles apartment. Settles was wanted in connection with a recent burglary. When investigators arrived to serve the warrant, they found 13 bags of marijuana and lots of equipment used to make drugs. After questioning Settles about the murders last week, investigators say he confessed to the killings.

Settles has a criminal record which includes Aggravated Burglary and numerous traffic charges. Settles is currently being held in the Shelby County Jail at 201 Poplar.
