Driver Charged With Critically Injuring Bicyclist

Traffic investigators with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office placed charges today against the driver who critically injured a bicycle rider in the Cordova area earlier this week.

Stephanie Drost, 32, of Memphis, has been charged with Leaving the scene of an accident and Failing to report an accident.

Deputies say just after 6 p.m. Tuesday evening, Steven Schaffer, 55, of Cordova, was riding his bicycle in the westbound lane of Raleigh LaGrange near Estacada Way. Witnesses say a blue Jeep Liberty driven by Ms. Drost crashed into the bike as Schaffer was riding along the side of the road.

Witnesses say she initially stopped and appeared to check on Schaffer. Ms. Drost then got back into the vehicle and drove away. Ms. Drost and a male child with her in the SUV were not hurt.

Steven Schaffer remains in critical condition today at The Regional Medical Center.
