Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Deputies To Graduate Today From DRT (Disturbance Response Team) Training
Release Date: April 2, 2004
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office will graduate 12 Corrections Deputies from specialized training designed to quickly and safety settle inmate violence and other disturbances which might occur at the Shelby County Jail.
The DRT (Disturbance Response Team) responds to critical incidents and crisis situations. For example, the DRT Team is contacted should there be a fight in the jail or if an inmate refuses to follow orders such as not leaving his/her cell or other area when requested by the jail staff.
“This is another crucial step in our effort to help prevent violence at the Shelby County Jail. The DRT Team is an outstanding group of Corrections Deputies who dedicate themselves to keep our inmates and staff as safe as possible,” said Shelby County Sheriff Mark H. Luttrell, Jr.
The deputies have been in class for two weeks at the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Training Academy. Deputies were given specialized training in physical tactics to stop violence.
Along with the 12 Shelby County Corrections Deputies, five Crittenden County Arkansas Sheriff’s Corrections Deputies will also receive their DRT certifications.
The Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office took note of the success of the Shelby County Jail DRT Team which inspired them to create the first DRT Team for the Crittenden County Jail.
With today’s graduates, the Shelby County Jail will now be protected by 53 DRT Corrections Deputies. The DRT Team serves at the Shelby County Jail 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The ceremony begins at 2 p.m. today at the Sheriff’s Office Training Academy at 993 Dovecrest.
